Romeo y Julieta 1875 Maduro Reserve Churchill

On a beautiful day I decided to smoke a Romeo y Julieta 1875 Maduro Reserve Churchill, a dark chocolate well-constructed stick with minimal veins. I will be drinking a Virgil’s Orange Cream Soda while I smoke this stick. I pinched the cigar from its wrapper and smell cocoa and hay at the foot and barnyard on the stick. I clipped the cap and got a very open draw of cocoa and spice which reminded me of Mexican Hot Chocolate Mouse, a dessert made by a friend of who owns a dessert company called Bar Dulce. I toast the foot and get cedar from the first few draws of full smoke.

 

The first third and the burn was a little uneven and the smoke was pumping out full. I tasted notes of nuts, salt and caramel. The grey ash with streaks of black fell about a third of the way in. I noticed a minor crack in the wrapper in this section however it never became a problem.

 

The second third and the airy ash is a variety of greys and blacks and the burn is even. I tasted notes of honey, saltiness and nutty flavors.  The ash fell again at the end of this section of the cigar.

 

The last third and I took off the band without incident or tearing and the burn was still burning even as the smoke kicked out full. The flavors I tasted in this last section was nuts, wood and saltiness. I smoked this cigar until I couldn’t hold it anymore.

 

This cigar is another great stick from the makers of Romeo y Julieta.  I would suggest if you haven’t tried one to pick a couple or few up and add them to your humidor. You won’t be disappointed. - April 18, 2013

La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva Romantico

I picked a couple La Aroma De Cuba Mi Amour Reserve Romantico on the recommendation of one of the owners of Woodland Hills Cigar Company. Today, I sat by the pool on this 74 degree morning with my music and iced coffee and was hoping to enjoy one of these sticks.

I popped this long box pressed cigar out of its wrapper and smelled sweet hay and cocoa at the foot and barnyard and cocoa on the stick. It is a well constructed, medium chocolate colored, minimal veinage cigar. I clipped the cap with my cutter and took a dry very open draw of spicy hay. I lit the foot with my torch lighter and tasted cedar from the first few draws. Spicy pepper, coffee notes, a touch of salt along with an earthy flavor filled out this first third. The burn is a little uneven and the smoke is full and creamy. The grey ash fell about 1/4 way in.

Took the first band off during the second third without any problem or tearing. Hints of nutmeg and salt are the flavors I taste. The mishmash of grey non-dense ash fell for its second time during this section and the burn even out at the second band which also came off with incident. The smoke continued to pump out full and creamy.

A strong cedar flavor was dominate during the last third alongs with hints of nuts. The ash fell again and the burn remained even. The smoke continued to kick out full. Strong pepper was the flavor toward the end of the smoke.

This full bodied smoke was very enjoyable and I have a couple more in my humidor to either smoke or share. If you see this cigar on the shelve of you local cigar shop pick a couple up for your humidor. You won't regret it.

Partagas 1845 Gigante

Size: 6 X 60

A trip to the gym and then a ride on my Royal Enfield motorcycle up the Pacific Coast Highway to Topanga Canyon Blvd, some sushi for lunch and then a cigar at the Woodland Hills Cigar Company was how I spend most of my Saturday. I cruised the well-stocked humidor at WHCC and spotted the newest cigar from Partagas, the Partagas 1845. I decide to smoke the 6 X 60 Gigante size.

 

I sat down in one of their nice leather chairs and pulled this fat honey brown colored cigar out of its wrapper and smelled cocoa at the foot and barnyard and cocoa on the stick. This well-constructed cigar had a couple of large veins running down the stick. The band is black and gold with an eagle spreading its wings on it. I clipped the cap with my cutter and got a chocolate flavor with a mild hot spice from the nice open draw, a very nice start.

 

I toasted the foot and got a cocoa flavor from the first draws of medium smoke. A little later the smoke became fuller. I experienced notes of wood and mild pepper in the first third. The burn became very uneven and I needed to touch it up. The grey ash held its form.

 

The second section and hints of wood and leather were the dominate flavors. However these flavors were not very strong. The burn continued to burn very uneven and the grey ash with black streaks still held on. It needed another touch up with the lighter. The draw wasn’t as open and my mouth became dry in this section. The ash fell for the first time at almost 2/3 of the way in.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The last third and the draw was still a little tight and mild in flavor. Flavors included a bitter hint of roasted coffee with notes of wood and leather. The band slid off without any problem or damage. I smoked this stick until I felt the heat on my fingers and finally laid it to rest.

I was really excited to purchase and smoke this new Partagas but found myself disappointed. The burn was very uneven, flavors weak and smoke mild for most of this smoke. It started off with such possibilities but didn’t smoke up to them. With all the nice cigars out there, I would pass on this stick unless you wanted a very mildly flavored smoke that needed constant touch ups.  - April 20, 2013

After smoking and enjoying a Pinolero during a San Lotano event at my favorite cigar shop, Old Oaks Cigar Company, I decided to pick up another one and review it. I will be drinking Virgil’s Black Cherry Cream Soda while smoking this cigar.

I put Jazz Radio on my computer, I pull this well constructed, nutty brown colored stick with minimal veinage out of its wrapper and take a sniff of the foot. I smell hay from the foot and the aroma I smell off the stick is barnyard and hay. The band is very colorful with it's two women mashing corn(?) I clip the tiny pigtail with my cutter and take a nice open smooth dry draw of spice and sweet hay. I toast the foot and taste a wood note. Other flavors in this first section are black pepper and cocoa. The smoke is nice and full but not dense and the burn is almost even. The grey ash with spots of black is holding its form.

The nice grey ash fell about halfway in and didn’t fall apart like powder. Notes of leather, wood and black pepper are the flavors I taste during this part of the cigar. Also a strong saltiness enters my palate. Burn is a little uneven like a child’s rollercoaster. The smoke is still kicking full.

 

The last third and the burn is even and I taste black pepper and cedar. As I removed the band, it stuck to the cigar and created a minor tear in the wrapper. Nothing bad and it didn’t affect the cigar. The smoke still pumped out full. I smoke this stick until I feel the heat on my lips.

This medium flavored cigar is a real nice smoke and a nice addition to the AJ Fernandez line of cigars. If you see them anyplace that has cigars, pick a couple or few up and put them in your humidor. You won’t be disappointed. - April 14, 2013
